52 Photo Challenge: Week 13-Sense of Scale

“Anything is grand if it’s done on a large enough scale.”
—Donna Tartt, The Secret History

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to capture a sense of scale. After finding an old photo of my dad in a rice field for my Shoebox Poetry series, I wanted to take photos of my daughter in a field. I figured it would do two things—show a sense of scale and give us a chance to recreate the image.

We found a field near my sister-in-law’s house filled with bright yellow flowers. It was muddy and a bit difficult, but I’m extremely happy with these photos. I hope you like them too! The rest of the photos were taken driving around looking for cranes. We found a few, but they were never quite in the right position. The clouds ended up being the star of the day. Let me know which of these best fits the assignment or if you have a favorite. Have a wonderful week!

Note: These photos were taken last Thursday. I’m currently on an emotional trip moving my mother to Washington state. I’ll post more about it later this week.

    • Thank you so much, John. My daughter is such a good sport and really such a beauty. We got my mom all moved yesterday and today we are off to do some sightseeing. I’m still feeling sad she’s going to be so far away, but I’m trying to make the most of it.

      • Use Facetime if you have an IOS device, I’ve lived far from my family for ten years now but it’s still a bit tough at times. You will be fine as will she. ❤️

  1. Scale: No.5 shows just how small we are under the big sky; No.8 the waterway (drainage channel?) disappearing into the horizon! A lovely set of photos, Bridgette, well done. 🌹🙋‍♂️

  2. I would say, you met the scale challenge and then some! Gorgeous… model, blue sky, clouds, flowers, reflections, and the mud adds interest. Lovely contrast between the delicate flowers and the muddy shoes. 🌻

  4. Love, love, love the images of your daughter in the flower field…I get a bit of a fantasy vibe from them…like she could be an elven princess communing with nature, or seeking the fae prince. The reflection and perspective in #6 is amazing 💞💞💞

  5. I love these photos, Bridgette. I love the way the reflection of the clouds is shown so clearly. My favourite photo is #1 as it speaks freedom to me. It’s like your beautiful daughter, with all her troubles, is standing in that gorgeous field and setting herself free, opening her arms to let the beauty of her surroundings into her heart. I know it’s not as easy or simple as that, though. I also like #6 because of the amazing reflection of the clouds in the road, which seems to stretch endlessly into the distance. A great take on a sense of scale. Thanks for sharing your wonderful photos, Bridgette. Xx 💛🌷💛

    • Thank you, Ellie! These photos represent a lot for me and I’m glad you can see that. The day was about my daughter feeling good in her own body, my last time doing photography on Thursdays with my mom, and simply enjoying the abundance of rain we’ve had this year. It will be over 100 degrees before I know it and I’ll look back on these photos with longing. I’m learning so much at this point in my life and I’m grateful for these hard and beautiful lessons. ❤️

  6. Just found your last two new posts. Yah! You asked, so – first daughter in field. Why? Because – not only scale, but BALANCE (that’s part of scale isn’t it). That one says it best to my eyes. The cloud reflections in water – very nice. And the dirty tennis shoes with yellow flowers on the side – interesting. You always seem to find your way – don’t you. You do.
