Photography: Blue Moon

Surrounded by the pink sky, the blue moon winks at the girl walking with her brother and his little dog. The moon knows the unspoken things they don’t say to each other. The dog does too. The wind blows softly and the waves lap against the shore. Seagulls watch and the girl can’t help but wonder if they are the same ones she saw last time.

“I’m okay,” she wants to call to them, even though she’s not sure it’s true.

It could be.

“Here I came to the very edge
where nothing at all needs saying,
everything is absorbed through weather and the sea,
and the moon swam back,
its rays all silvered,
and time and again the darkness would be broken
by the crash of a wave,
and every day on the balcony of the sea,
wings open, fire is born,
and everything is blue again like morning. “

I saw the eighth full moon of the year while at Dillion’s Beach with my brother, mother, and my two teenagers. These are my favorite full moon photos so far. I know they are kind of repetitive, but I liked so many and hope you do too. Please let me know if you have a favorite.

Also, I’m considering entering a photo contest. More on that soon!

Oh, and here’s my brother’s dog Henry. Isn’t he cute in his little sweater?

All photos were taken with an Olympus OM-D and edited with ON1 Photo RAW.

  1. OK, interesting but tough to like one more than another. The first when first seen was my favorite (no sense to that huh?). Soft focus works here well. I want to be closer. May I please? Numbers 3 & 6 & 7 similar, but no, first more provocative still. But then, maybe 8 is my favorite, moon so dim only the attentive are rewarded by its sight. I like subtle. This is. Number 12, yea, birds join in, nice. Then 14 is almost too much, but wins “pretty”, but is pretty the favored goal? Nope. Good on you for dedication to your craft, making a path through all the visions we see then forget. AND your intro text was a story I only wanted more of. Maybe an idea is a whole short story in 1 to 2 paragraphs. Almost a poem in other clothes! Very nice.

    • Thank you for such thoughtful comments, always. I’ve been doing these little intros into the moon photos, sort of mini stories, and I really like them. I like how they pair together and tell the story of the night for me. I decided recently I’m going to put them all in a book at the end of the year for myself. A collection of 2024 in words and photos. I might just throw some random of my poems in there too. This is something that might become annual, putting together a collection for each year of my work. I still want to go back and publish my 52 short stories too. I’ve been thinking grand, but right now I just want to hold my work. I think that’s enough for me for now.

    • Thank you so much, Tom. I almost didn’t post #8, because the moon is a washed out light, but there was something different about it I still loved. I’m also happy you liked #15, reflections of sky are some of my favorite things to capture. I wish I could have got the reflection of the moon, but it never lined up quite right. The closest I got was in #7.
