Yesterday, taking advantage of the surprisingly cool weather for this time of year, Superman and I went to the Sacramento Zoo. We saw axolotls, a possum who’d gotten into the red panda enclosure, giraffes, baby flamingos, playful meerkats, a snake undergoing a procedure, and a giant rhinoceros.
It was exactly what I needed. Seeing the world through the eyes of a 6-year-old and my camera lens did wonders for me. Please enjoy these photos and let me know if you have a favorite.

Fabulous photos! Are 12 -14 of a Meerkat?

Those are meerkats! Aren’t they just the curtest? I honestly think I could watch them all day.

I took drama in college and we were told to go to the zoo and pick an animal to use for a monologue. I picked the meerkat. I had the class in hysterics with my meerkat impression. I must have watched them for hours.

I bet that was hilarious! If I remember right, wasn’t there a reality show with meerkats?

The meerkats fascinated me. I don’t remember anything on TV with them though.

Your photos are fascinatingly nice! #10 is my favorite because (even if a giraffe and human are new to each other and not of the same species) they connect and connect closely with each other. I think a lot of people could learn from these two (and even from the plant that connects both of them).

What a wonderful way to look at that photo! Life really is all about connection and it’s something we desperately need right now in the world. Not just with those near us, but with people not like us at all. Things might be a whole lot different if our goal, and how we measured success, had to do with how connected with our with others. Can you imagine?

Thanks! I really loved watching the baby flamingos. They were mostly hiding behind the parents, but seeing them fluff their little wings was so adorable. Is there a zoo in Vegas? I know so many of the casinos have their own thing, but not sure I’ve heard of a zoo in the area.

Some of the venues have or had some kind of animal attractions but this city is constantly tearing down it’s history which is so ridiculous. But, I did find this:

Oh, that’s exciting! I hope they get the funding they need to build it.

Yes, always the funds!

You’d think some of those high-roller casinos could give back a little and help fund it.

Cripes, they have millions, it would be a nice tax write-off for them…

Me too! I’m considering taking the two-hour drive to the big zoo in San Francisco, or the one in Oakland, before the summer is over. Not all zoos treat their animals ethically, but I love the idea that these animals are ambassadors for the diversity and for protecting our planet. It’s hard to not care about meerkats once you see them in person.

Where I live, we have an excellent small zoo. We also have Giraffes too, which is fun.

Lovely photos and those red panda (I think they are) my favourites

I LOVE red pandas! They look like stuffed animals. That possum in the tree had climbed into the red panda exhibit and you can bet I tracked down a zoo keeper to get it out. While possums can be cute too, I worried they could hurt those sweet pandas, and I wasn’t having that.

Have you fed the giraffes? It’s so fun! I do it every time I’m there. Best $5 spent.

First, what a really great zoo! The sign itself! If you ever get to NC, the state zoo here (Asheboro) has been set up with mostly natural environments. It makes for a lot of walking, but it’s really cool to see the animals in natural and large areas. Savannah-type animals are all in one enclosure (if they aren’t prey for another!).
Second, favorites: 9, 13 for Best Meerkat Photo, 15 because I don’t recognize that cat right off, 16, 17, 21, 26, 27, and 28. #27 reminded me of my first exchange with Neil. I replied to one of his comments on your blog, and he visited my blog to see….a photo of duck feet. He found that so weird that he figured I might be “okay” enough.

Thank you! Your zoo sounds fantastic. If I ever make it NC, I’ll be sure to check it out. Fun fact, I almost moved to Raleigh in the early 2000s for work. It’s a beautiful part of the country.
So glad you liked my meerkat photo. Man, I could watch those cuties all day long. I’m pretty sure #15 is a Jaguar, or at least related to them.
Aww! Thank you for sharing the Neil memory with me. I miss him so much. He was fond of people who noticed small details, who “paid attention” and loved big. Still working on a book of our poetry, trying hard to honor him in the best way. Right now I’m staring at a little cat figurine he mailed me. For sure there will be cats in our book.
