“I spry my closed vision
over the streets of this city and the shadows lurching within it.”
—Suman Pokhrel
I’ve spent the week in various places in downtown Sacramento and it reminded me how much I miss traveling. I used to visit new cities, exploring on my own, letting my curiosity guide me. I’d strike up conversations with strangers, share a bit of their worldview for a moment, and I always left feeling renewed. While I’ve not done much of it lately, there are moments that feed that creative energy. Little artist dates, as Julie Cameron calls them.
One such date was a quick stop in Petaluma on the way back from our Dillion Beach trip. The teens went one way and I went the other. Although it was quick, there was plenty for me to feast my eyes upon. Here are a few of my favorite shots. Let me know if you have a favorite and let’s travel together soon.

Number 11 grabs me today. Looks like fun.

Thanks! I was thinking that some of that brick reminds me of the photos you shared from Saint Paul.

Loved the asymmetry of 6’s old timey lock and 7’s carved details of the headboard. Great snapshots! 🙂

I’m so glad you liked them. #6 is an old safe in a bank that’s been turned into a store. It’s a cool place.

#8 was different. I remember visiting there years ago but took no photos.

Did you happen to visit Copperfields books? It’s such an amazing bookstore.

Love black and white photos. They look very haunting for some inexplicable reasons.

I lived in Petaluma once. For a year.
Great little town. It’s been a while, so it’s nice to see the photos.

Love these! So cool. I’m always drawn to black-and-white photos. The one of the ceiling with the sunlight and mist is really cool.

Thanks! That was one of my favorite shots. It’s the sky reflected through the window. Such a cool effect.

5 and 11 are my favorite. 5 because my kids went through an Illuminati phase.

Exploring new cities is always fun!
As you probably remember from a recent DLTDGB episode, I’ve had an ongoing goal over the last 25 years to go to as many different In-N-Out Burger locations as I can. Four years ago, I took a day trip to a city that a lot of people around here make fun of for being boring and such, mostly to go to more In-N-Outs, but I also did some exploring in this supposedly boring city, and I had a great time. I did two more trips like this to two other cities in day trip distance with In-N-Outs I hadn’t been to, and I enjoyed both of those trips too.
I really need to do something like that this year before I go back to work, and the problem is that I’ve been to so many In-N-Outs that the closest one I haven’t been to is about a 3-4 hour drive. That’s still doable if I take off early in the morning, of course, and I’d still have time to explore… But now that I think about it, an acquaintance from high school whom I’ve been friends with for most of the social media era told me a few months ago when the aforementioned In-N-Out was open and said I should go see her when I go to that one, so maybe I’ll have to see if I can make that happen in the next few weeks.

Love these black and whites, Bridgette. I think my favorite is the first one that isn’t numbered. But #2 caught my attention from your perspective which you always do so well. And I liked the content of #s 5 and 6. Of course they were all interesting. I hope the teens had as much fun as you did with the excursion.

Thanks! I’m so glad you find my photos interesting. That really means so much to me. Yeah, the teens found cool shops to explore and cute other teens to flirt with 🤣

Great photos, Bridgette. We love Petaluma for two motorcycle shops where my hubby bought his ‘bikes’ and Lombardi’s is a good place to lunch! We’ve also walked around downtown during the holidays, which is fun. 🙂

Sounds like you visit Petaluma even more than me! Yes, it’s got a lot of cool shops and is really pretty at Christmas time. I’ll have to try Lombardi’s next time. Thank you.

I like #6 and #8 and I’m envious you were able to get #11. Thanks for invoking Petaluma–it brought back a semi-fond memory. (the honeymoon for my first marriage!)

I’m so glad you liked these pictures! That bird was actually inside a cage and it was quite tricky to get him in focus. Glad I was able to bring back your semi-fond memories. It’s a cute town.

#1 and #2 were my favourites this time. It’s neat how black and white photography highlights contrasts so well, and various different textures.
