Photography: Sacramento County Fair

On Monday, I spent the morning at the Sacramento County Fair with my camera. As a former 4-H member, I had a wonderful time chatting with the kids about their animals. I was especially interested in the goats, as I’ve started working on a re-write of my middle-grade novel which features a tiny goat by the name of Grizz. Research and cuteness—double win!

Let me know if you have a favorite photo and I hope you have a fantastic day.

Note: I’m sorry my blog has been so sporadic the last year. I’ve been terrible about reading blogs and posting. So many things are happening. I had my second book-signing. The poetry book honoring Neil Reid is halfway completed. I’m working on launching a new monthly newsletter. My daughter, my baby, is turning 18. I’m not giving up on this blog or my connection to this beautiful WordPress community. I’m working out ways to be more involved soon. Stay tuned and thank you for continuing to support me. It means the world to me!

  • These photos were taken with an Olympus OM-D and edited with ON1 Photo RAW.

Here’s a bonus photo of me showing my horse, Rocket, at the county fair a million years ago. Aren’t we adorable?

  1. #s 5, 8, 9, & 16 are my favorites! You took some incredibly amazing photos this time around. I imagine it was hard to capture some of the animals. But you succeeded. 😊

    • I grabbed the image quickly as I walked by and it ended up being one of my favorite images. I love how the kids just walk around with their animals, sharing in the joy of being together in a new environment. I remember being at the fair as a kid with my horse, and having kids come up and ask me questions. It made all the hours riding, cleaning stalls, and practicing worth it.

    • Thanks, Michael. Yeah, I loved all the oversized games for kids (all for free.) They had an enormous battleship, chess, checkers, light-bright, connect four, and several puzzles. So much fun.

That last photo is me back in the day with my horse. It feels like another lifetime. Being at the fair always brings back those core memories—eating snow cones on the back of my horse, sleeping in the stall because my horse had anxiety, winning a blue ribbon for the trail class. I do miss my old farm life quite a bit.

    • Thank you! It feels great to have this sudden surge of creative energy. I’m riding the momentum forward while I can. The butterflies were a nice surprise. Actually, quite a few landed on me and I had to make one get off my hat before leaving the tent. Such a fun experience.

  3. I’m looking forward to that Neil Reid project! And yes, you were adorable then as now. I think it’s alchemical: we turn physical gold into spiritual gold.

    • Hey John! All that’s changed is the header image, still mostly the same website. I’ve been dealing with some heavy stuff and so haven’t been around much, but your comment is spurring me to give an update. I’ll hopefully one up today. Thank you for always supporting me.

  4. I’m just swooning over how much you’ve grown as a photographer! Can we talk about that because it’s incredible?! Also… The pony is adorable- looked very similar to my heart horse.

    • Aww! Thank you! You know, sometimes I don’t see it and so it feels really good to hear you say that. I’m trying my hand at some portraits soon and I’m terrified. Seems like that’s a whole new adventure!
