Photography: Road Trip

This week I was reminded again at how complicated emotions can be, at how we can hold both tremendous grief and overwhelming love in the same breath. It was a week of tragedy, connection, rock camp, fairy doors, bubbles, car talks, and two panic attacks.

Would I argue with the rain or clouds or the ocean itself?  I see faces, I see shapes, I see love wanting only to freely bloom.  I think I won’t complain.–Neil Reid

I’m still struggling, but I’m finding my way forward. Part of that path involves showing up here with you, even if I have to fight myself to do it.

About a month ago, my daughter and I drove up the coast of California into Oregon and Washington. Although this trip wasn’t what I had hoped, I got some pretty photos. Here are some of the best from day one.

I’d love to know if you have a favorite photo; can you guess mine?

  1. In short, it is an intimate, warm and courageous text. It speaks of pain and love, of struggle and tenderness, and it does so with a sincere voice that makes you want to hug and say: I understand you. And I am here too. 🌷✨

      • That’s right… The human experience can be beautiful and hard at the same time, and that’s exactly why we need mutual presence and support so much. Thank you for your hug, I receive it with an open heart and send you another equally strong one. Here we are, accompanying each other. 💙✨ Big hug.

  2. My favorite is #12 because it is a “made” picture. Often we photogs are offered beauty all around us; all we need do is frame it appropriately. When you see something and ‘arrange’ the elements to make the photo, then I think it means more. “Kenny, I’m gonna make pitchers! Wanna come!” So said my artist friend, Mary.

    • Oh, I do love that! I hadn’t considered the idea of “made” photos before. Your friend Mary sounds like someone I’d love to have a photography date with. I do love how that photo turned out.

      • Actually, Mary drew and painted. “Making pictures” for her meant either quick sketches or snaps she could use to draw/paint. I was thinking of profiling her in a post. I’m sure she’s passed at this point.
