Photography: Sea and Sand

My beautiful sister and her family invited me on a trip with them last weekend to the ocean. For a moment, all the worries of life were swept to the side. I got to be a kid with a camera. Dogs. Forts. Dance parties. Card games. Laughs. Deer. A hornet bite on my neck (not so fun). Reading in bed. Coffee on the balcony. Seagulls. Snuggles by the fire. A sea monster sighting (maybe). Salt water taffy. Mint tea. A stunning sunset.

I’m starting to feel words swirling inside me again. They seem almost ready to come forth. Yesterday, one of the local indie bookstores, Bloodstone Books, emailed “can you bring more books to the shop? We are officially out.” I can almost forget sometimes my book is in the world, but people are buying it. Slowly but surely. Taking more copies to them today, which feels fantastic.

My daughter is having some scary health struggles and my son is getting his wisdom teeth out tomorrow. Life continues to throw things at us, but damn, I sure do love seeing it all through the camera lens. For those taking the time to view all my photos lately, THANK YOU!

Let me know if you have a favorite photo and have a fantastic day!

    • Thanks, Roy! I got lucky with the bird shot, and those cows are my favorite. I pass them all the time on the way to the ocean, but finally pulled over and managed to capture one shot. I think he’s just the cutest.

  1. The sunset photos are gorgeous but I especially like #23, which resembles an abstract painting. I think there is something in the sea air which is restorative; I certainly feel better after spending a day on the beach! But I hope your daughter and son clear these health issues soon and come out well and happy. It is scary to have children who are ill or undergoing a tricky medical procedure, but it is also part of being a mom to worry about them until they’re healthy again. Wishing you peace of mind,

    • Thank you! I also loved #23. It’s mostly unedited, except to crop it a bit. The sky was just that beautiful. I told my nephew, sometimes I can stare at the clouds and it feels like another sea is above us. Like we are surrounded by water. Ever get that feeling?

Yeah, although my kids are technically both adults now, I’m realizing my job of “mothering” them won’t ever be over and I’m okay with that. However, I needed that time at the ocean to find the calm before the storm (as they say).

I appreciate your kindness so very much and hope you are well.

      • I’m with my grown older daughter and her family and am enjoying watching my grandchildren bicker and joke and run around the house like wild puppies. It’s strange sometimes to watch my child deal with her kids as a parent: she’s funny and stern and sometimes at the end of her rope. I remember when I was in her shoes and thought at times having kids was a huge mistake: though in retrospect it was the best decision I ever made.

  2. I don’t know anything about photography, I only know what I like. I like number 4 because ladybugs are magical. I like number 20 because something has ended or changed, and will never return. I love number 29 because it harkins back to a time when strong, young, plump fingers held a baby and were seen as a thing of beauty and not a weight character flaw.

  3. Ah, so lovely! #’s 5, 8, and 15 for the composition, but especially 15 for all those reflective ripples. Of the sunsets (always a gift, aren’t they?), 20, 21, 23, and 25 appeal most because of the editing or lack thereof. I think 25 would be my favorite.

Glad your book’s selling! I’m only one story into it, but I promise I’m hitting some more stories in the very near future.

    • Thank you! I’m so glad you liked these, especially that gorgeous sunset. I barely had to edit them, as the sky looked that glorious. It was one of my favorite moments of the trip.

Thank you again for buying my book and reading it. You don’t know how much that means to me!
