Photography: For You

The news right now is horrific. I watched the video of the second person killed by ICE agents, gunned down on a street in broad daylight, and my heart broke into a million tiny pieces. Again. A powerful sense of mourning for America has overcome me, more than I ever thought possible. I’m terribly sad and angry.

It’s hard to create right now, it’s hard to do anything right now, but something tells me you might need these photos as much as I do. These little tiny pieces of art I crafted for you when I should have been sleeping. Thorns. Flowers. Weeds. Fruit.

These are for you, for me, for all of us.

  1. It sure is a strange and unhappy time in the world just now. The wheel will turn again though and it does our sanity no good by dwelling on those things we can’t control. Focusing on the micro beauty of nature is a good plan – I look at #10 and the single gossamer thread that some creature has constructed. Is that the job finished or are there more threads to come?

    • This is exactly it, Roy. I keep telling myself the world will tilt back toward goodness, empathy and kindness, but it’s hard to not sink into the heartache of all that’s happening. Micro beauty is exactly where I’m shifting, and keeping my kids close. That thread in #10 is beautiful, isn’t it?

  2. All were great, although I might be biased about the cat 😺. You’re really correct about the times. I lived through the Nixon years. They weren’t as bad as this but there is the same tone. Paraphrasing an old song, “What if you knew him, and found him dead on the ground? How can you run when you know?” Keeps going around my brain these days. Stay strong, B.

    • Those are powerful lyrics and totally seem fit for right now. I actually was thinking about the Nixon years the other day, but it feels so different because this president doesn’t seem to have any reverence for the office of president. He doesn’t care how it makes the country look or who he hurts. It’s only if he’s in the news and everyone is talking about him. Also, don’t see any way he’d step down.

The cat photo was a favorite of mine and I know Neil would have loved it. He always had a soft spot for kitties.

  3. Neil Young in the CSNY days. I think I was 17 when I first heard it, looking ahead to the possibility of being drafted for Vietnam. Agree with your contrast to Nixon, but time will tell. During the late 60’s, early 70’s it seemed we were being hunted down by our own government. I ran with several folk who were sure Nixon would invoke martial law. Now here we are again…

The cat strongly resembles my first Best Cat Ever who lived nearly 20 years, moved with me ten times (including twice across the country, once in direction), and watched me marry, divorce, and marry again. If only I’d listened to her: she tolerated the first one, but liked the second! I think I wrote about her (the cat) a few years ago. Three-legged wonder cat.

    • I grew up listening to CSNY on repeat by my dad, so I’m certain I’ve heard that song more than once. Interesting perspective. I know every generation thinks what they are living through it the absolute worse, and hopefully all the terrible things that could happen, won’t happen at all. I think the sheer amount of “media” these days does contribute to it all feeling too big, you know? Imagine if they’d had cellphones during Vietnam, or in the streets during the civil rights movement. There was video, yes, but not like now. It’s good (in that people are held accountable and truth is observed), but also just so hard to watch.

I think I remember reading about your cat. Aww! Cats, all animals really, have a good sense about people. What a sweet story.
