What do you do when you want to practice photography and you’ve got no models? You find some around the house. These are silly, but they are me trying out some new settings on my camera. I’m starting to get the crispness I’ve been lacking. What do you think? Do you have a favorite?
I’m headed to visit a friend for the next five days, and I’ll be taking her portrait photos at sunset in a beautiful location. I felt legit packing up my camera gear, including my brand new fancy flash. Thank you to every single person who checks out my journey and follows along.
And if you know me in real life, or live in the Sacramento area, I’m looking for models to practice with. Please don’t make me keep using toys 🙂

I don’t know, these were definitely fun, IMHO. Perhaps you can convince Mattel to do product photography as a paying gig? Next time I end up in your neck of the woods, you can use me as your model.

Dude, wouldn’t it be nice to get some Mattel money! I think I’m going to do some more of these, perhaps with Calico Critters next. It was just too much fun.

Shucks, I’m hardly model material. Maybe the seals will pose with me and make me look good?
Everyone is model material 🙂 I want to eventually get to the level that people want me to photograph them in “my style.” First, I have to develop said style! (Wait, why does that sound like “draw me like one of your french girls”? hahaha!)

Virtually all are crisp where the photographer intended. #8 was particularly good because you avoided focusing on the grass, …seemingly on purpose. #11 bothered me because the Kirk figure doesn’t seem to be in focus. #13 seems as if it were a difficult shot, and if so, kudos.
Thanks! These were so fun to do and these models kind of do what I tell them 🙂 I look at these now and see all the ways they could be better, some of which you pointed out. I’m learning photography in layers. Composition in these, I think, was pretty good, but focus lacked in some and editing too could use some work. One step at a time.
