Photography: Strawberry Moon

I’ve been doing a lot of portrait photography lately, and neglecting my nature shots. I tried to remedy that by capturing the moon a few weeks ago, but I couldn’t find it before it got super dark outside. Here’s my best attempt, including two shots I took while doing an adorable family shoot at the river.

Also, thank you to those reading my daily poems. It’s a project I’ve been wanting to do for a while, but it’s honestly feeling like a lot. I appreciate everyone rooting me on and supporting me.

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.

  • These were taken with my Olympus E-M1 MarkII, using several different lenses and edited with Lightroom Classic.

  1. A beautiful collection! Your portraits may be wonderful, but these nature shots remind us that beauty is everywhere for those who pause to notice it.

I especially admire your dedication to both photography and your daily poetry project. Keep going—your creativity is inspiring, and your work continues to brighten the days of your readers, including me.

    • Aww! I needed that encouragement today. It feels sometimes like “why am I working so hard?” I know creating is good for my soul and I love when something I share resonates, but daily motivation can be hard to find at times. Thank you for seeing me and cheering me on.

  2. Poetry can best you. I have this feeling that you won’t allow it to, though.

I hope you stick with it. I love how your mind works… you don’t just write poetry, you pour stories out onto the screen that are massive and artful, yet bite-sized chunks of knowledge and reflections, too.

    • Thanks! I’ve been STRUGGLING to find the moon lately as it rises so late and is hidden for so long by buildings and such. These were taken after I left the river, which is where I thought I’d get good moon shots, but it was late and no moon! I finally saw it and pulled over and took these in a parking lot 😭

    • I’ve learned it’s important to be shooting with spot metering-took me forever to figure that out. I prefer to shoot the moon at sunrise or sunset at the colors of the sky add to the overall photos and are just more interesting, to me. Just a personal preference. I love the moon too!

  3. I’ve said this before, I’m sure, but your photos of the moon at night remind me of a Japanese painting or woodblock print, moody and mysterious.

I love your poetry. I don’t know how you manage to write one daily, or do you write a batch in one sitting and post them throughout the week? Either way, it’s remarkable. I still think you should publish them in a book, maybe from one of the indie presses out here in California.

    • Thank you! What a huge compliment! I need to photograph the moon more often. ❤️❤️❤️

This poetry challenge is something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile. I do write them every day, sometimes close to midnight. I’m actually working on a poetry book paying homage to my dear friend and fellow poet Neil Reid who left us a few years ago. My goal is to have it out by Christmas.

      • For me it was changing to spot metering. That made the biggest difference. I don’t have a super zoom lens, but I know I could get better shots if I did. I just love being able to photograph the moon at all. It’s always so magical.

      • I’m not using a macro here, those are for photographing things really close up. I think I used my 14-150mm lens for this one. Leica’s are amazing cameras! I got a chance to play with a friend’s a few weeks ago, and I loved it! See if you can find out how to shift to spot-metering, I bet that will make all the difference for you trying to photograph the moon.
