Mom said she wanted witchy photos in the woods. She wanted to dance in the moonlight and howl. She wanted pointy hats and dark makeup. She wanted her vision of us to be captured forever.
What she didn’t say is generational pain lives in our bones and she wants us to be free. She didn’t say mortality knocks and time moves oh so quickly. She didn’t say let’s be stronger, my dearies, and stop letting others control our happiness. She didn’t have to.
Mom said she wanted witchy photos in the woods. I gave them to her, minus the hats.
This is for you Mom, the one who gives and loves so big, who taught me to be strong, and who carries so much and still laughs. I hope you like the photos and know how much you are loved.
“You’re breaking generational curses. That’s why this doesn’t come easy for you. You’re who your bloodline has been waiting for.” —unknown

- These photos are of my mom, my daughter, and me. All photos were taken with an Olympus OM-D and edited with ON1 Photo RAW, except the last one and it’s a screenshot from a small video I took on my iPhone 13. My talented daughter took the photos I’m in.
Generations! Lovely photos, Bridgette. ❤️🙏🏻

It really is. Halfway through taking the photos my mom said, “you will be happy to have these when I’m gone.” I didn’t want to feel that emotion, but I really felt it while editing these.

Your mother is correct. My mother passed in 2012, my sister and I buried my dad last month. Losing your parents is incredibly difficult, Bridgette.

Oh Bridgette, you had me immediately with your brief yet potent text. You’ve a talent for adventurous words that transport a reader, then deliver a sense of actually being there personally, an immediate witness. Then you had me all over again with that first photograph of your mother getting to be the witch she wanted to be, living the words. Foolhardy indeed to pick favorites, and we are all foolish sometimes, because my gut says these are perhaps the best photo images you’ve ever done. Leastwise that’s what this moment says to me. A beautiful family folio. Thank you so much for sharing with me and all of us.

Thank you for such a kind comment. I struggled some to capture all the feelings present taking these photos and then editing them. I’m glad the essence of connection and family comes through. I’m so grateful for you.

Thank you so much, Judith. My mom was the black sheep of her family and in many ways broke away from generations of abuse. I’ve taken her lead and tried to do even better by my daughter. So much healing around us and pain, but we are closer because of it.

That you support one another is so wonderful,Bridgette. Even more is that you are being strong and loving with your daughter. An abusive family is something I have experience of. – so I’m sending many good wishes to you.

Love that Rebecca! Yes! My mother’s story is filled with hardship and those wounds were passed down to me as a child, but we’ve all done a lot in the last few years to heal. Freedom comes from walking toward the pain and saying the hard things. I’m learning.

Your mum is gorgeous and looks full of fun and mischief Bridgette. And I love that she wanted you to capture her witchy side. I like the broom, shame about the pointy hats though 🙂

Well, Roy, we will have to get some pointy hats and try again at some point 🙂 You are right about her being fun and full of mischief. She’s a strong, beautiful woman.
