Photography: Chalk It Up

Over Labor Day weekend, I attended the 35th annual Chalk It Up event, a free open-art festival for families. My daughter had the privilege of opening the show with her G.I.R.L.S. Rock Sacramento band, Wisteria. It was a lovely, albeit hot, morning filled with art and music.

Let me know if you have a favorite shot and have a fantastic day!

    • She’s an incredible bass player and so much cooler than me 🙂 You could still play bass guitar. There are plenty of how-to videos online and you might find a nice used one in a pawn shop or even a nice thrift store. Glad you liked those chalk drawings. I’m always amazed at the talent.

  1. I’ve never seen the chalk drawings in the process of being drawn, only when they were finished. It’s exciting to see the artists actually sketching them out—I’d forgotten about the technique of using a grid when working with a smaller picture. I like the cat drawing—and now I wish I had gone this year. (I backed out, it was too hot and I had trouble finding parking nearby last year.) I also wish I had heard your daughter’s band! I wish I had the courage to play in a rock band back when I was young, but I was far too shy and a dutiful daughter back then. I’m glad young women have more opportunities and support now.

    • It is always so hot and parking can definitely be a struggle. I usually go as early as I can in the morning and pay the ridiculous price to park in the Memorial Garage. My daughter’s band always (well for the past few years) opens up the festival on Saturday at 11 a.m. Maybe you can join us next year. Also, I’m also glad young women have more opportunities and support. I try and donate to these programs because they are so important.

    • So glad that cat made you laugh! I love how the subject matter of the images are so varied. I should have got a few photos of the center squares, which kids do. Next year I’ll be sure to capture those, because they are always so charming. Also, yeah, my daughter does play bass guitar. She’s much cooler than me!

    • #6 was one of my favorites too! The style was so unique. I’m sure the artist later went in to add shading, but it’s fun to see the works at different stages. Maybe next year I’ll do some progress/finished photos as it’s really incredible to see the finished works. It’s such a good reminder for me that art can be temporary and it’s worth doing regardless of any outcome. And, yeah, my daughter is pretty rad. I’m her biggest fan!
