Over Labor Day weekend, I attended the 35th annual Chalk It Up event, a free open-art festival for families. My daughter had the privilege of opening the show with her G.I.R.L.S. Rock Sacramento band, Wisteria. It was a lovely, albeit hot, morning filled with art and music.
Let me know if you have a favorite shot and have a fantastic day!

- Photos were taken with an Olympus OM-D and edited with ON1 Photo RAW
- See my photos of last year’s event
- Find out more about Chalk It Up and their mission to support the arts
- Considering donating to my favorite non-profit, G.I.R.L.S. Rock Sacramento
I was scrolling through, wondering if you snapped a photo or two of your daughter’s band! That last shot is superb!

Beautiful art! I like the cat laying on its side, and moon image. How sweet that your daughter plays bass guitar! I wanted to play bass but it never happened.

She’s an incredible bass player and so much cooler than me 🙂 You could still play bass guitar. There are plenty of how-to videos online and you might find a nice used one in a pawn shop or even a nice thrift store. Glad you liked those chalk drawings. I’m always amazed at the talent.

Thanks, there are always bass guitars on the wall at a pawn store I sell my used ham radio gear to. I follow some great bassists on Instagram. Have a great week!

It really is and they do so much to support art and music in schools. It’s a great organization and a fun event. I only wish the weather wasn’t always so hot.

I’ve never seen the chalk drawings in the process of being drawn, only when they were finished. It’s exciting to see the artists actually sketching them out—I’d forgotten about the technique of using a grid when working with a smaller picture. I like the cat drawing—and now I wish I had gone this year. (I backed out, it was too hot and I had trouble finding parking nearby last year.) I also wish I had heard your daughter’s band! I wish I had the courage to play in a rock band back when I was young, but I was far too shy and a dutiful daughter back then. I’m glad young women have more opportunities and support now.

It is always so hot and parking can definitely be a struggle. I usually go as early as I can in the morning and pay the ridiculous price to park in the Memorial Garage. My daughter’s band always (well for the past few years) opens up the festival on Saturday at 11 a.m. Maybe you can join us next year. Also, I’m also glad young women have more opportunities and support. I try and donate to these programs because they are so important.

A good day out. I like the chalk box and the cat and of course your daughter and the band

I’m always drawn to the chalk boxes and the artists’ hands. I could do an entire photo spread on hands, I think. Glad you liked these and I’m so proud of my girl!

It is good to see your daughter getting out in front of people enjoying herself. Watching her grow up from that young girl modelling in your photos has been special

I’m so glad. She’s really my whole heart in a person. Kind-hearted, talented, and beautiful. I only wish she could see it more, but hope she will over time.

She will. Let her know she has encouragement from Australia to be the best she can be

#16 the cat made me laugh, so that’s my choice. Some skill there (of which I have none). Is your daughter playing bass there? A proper Jack Bruce.

So glad that cat made you laugh! I love how the subject matter of the images are so varied. I should have got a few photos of the center squares, which kids do. Next year I’ll be sure to capture those, because they are always so charming. Also, yeah, my daughter does play bass guitar. She’s much cooler than me!

I am torn between 7 and 14, Bridgette. What fantastic art! And what an opportunity for your daughter. I hope she goes on to great things. 💖

#7 was an artists’ self portrait, which was truly incredible. I love the detail of #14 as well. Thanks for the kind words and I’ll pass your wishes onto my daughter. She’s pretty amazing and I can’t wait to see what she does with her life.

so cool for your daughter and you were there for her. each one is interesting but #6 jumped out with me.

#6 was one of my favorites too! The style was so unique. I’m sure the artist later went in to add shading, but it’s fun to see the works at different stages. Maybe next year I’ll do some progress/finished photos as it’s really incredible to see the finished works. It’s such a good reminder for me that art can be temporary and it’s worth doing regardless of any outcome. And, yeah, my daughter is pretty rad. I’m her biggest fan!

What a great festival! Every town should have one.

I fully agree! They do it at such a hot time of the year, but it makes sense, because you can’t have it raining and washing all the chalk away.

2, 8, 13, 14. They tell the story and they are “made” photos.
