A crane sat staring at the moon. I couldn’t stop my van to take its picture because several cars were behind me, but I saw how it lifted its elegant white neck to show reverence. A few minutes later I found a spot to pull over and startled a field of crows who took off noisily, letting me know I’d disturbed their quiet sunrise.
My camera helped me worship the full corn moon, to capture it sitting on branches and bobbing between power lines. I was struck by how much of an outsider I was to this scene, but also how much I long to remember my connection to all things.
As the bright moon faded into the blue morning, the sun took over the sky. It blinked over the horizon blinding me temporarily, and my eyes fell on the plastic Superman dangling from my rearview mirror and it reminded me I’m doing my best. We all are.
“That is where you’ve always been wrong about me, Lex. I am as human as anyone. I love, I-I get scared. I wake up every morning, and despite not knowing what to do, I put one foot in front of the other, and I try to make the best choices that I can. I screw up all the time, but that is being human, and that’s my greatest strength. And someday, I hope, for the sake of the world, you understand that it’s yours too.”

You are always such a light in my comments section. Thank you for coming with me to see the moon and I’m overjoyed you liked so many of them.

I love the color progress of the sky in the first, how the burnt orange is a compliment to the grey purple at the top of the image. I love the painterly blur of the ravens against their background in #1, it’s almost more painting than photograph. I love the progression of this implied early morning drive, as we move from full dark and full moon, to the sunlight shining through your window and silhouetting superman.

Thank you so much, Anna for these kind words. I really wanted to share how much I love that early morning hours, the way the moon starts out a bright light in a dark sky, and then almost disappears as the sun appears, fading into the blue. I’m glad it worked for you. Also, I too loved the bird photo and how it looks almost like a painting.

Thanks, Michael. I’m fairly certain I’ve taken dozens of photos of that same tree, but it always strikes me as being special.

Nice collection Bridgette, especially the lone tree, flying crows, and moon close up.

I’m glad you liked those shots. I never know what I’m going to find, even though I’ve been on that drive at least two dozen times. It’s what I love about nature and fields, how they are never quite the same. I suppose, really, that’s the truth about all things.

A lovely evening of moon bathing Bridgette. It was a Blood Moon here and I dragged myself from bed at 3am and watched until the moon dipped below the trees so I missed out on the full eclipse.
Thanks fellow moon child 😀

Moon child ❤️🌕 That’s some beautiful dedication to the moon. I sort of miss my full moon journey I took last year, photographing it every single month. It made me stop and really look at it. Might have to do it again.

Great quote … he’s the best Superman we’ve seen for quite a while. 🙂

Agreed! I went to the movies last night and saw “The Long Walk” — a difficult and upsetting film which tackles some big/hard things and left me sobbing. I think it should be shown as a double-feature with Superman right afterward, so you can end with hopefulness and kindness back as the focus. We are living in difficult/strange times.

‘The Long Walk’ looks intriguing, but I think I’ll pass. I don’t mind mvies that make me think, but there has to be something uplifting for me to watch them.

I liked that one too, the way you can see the road stretching out before you. It makes you feel hopeful, like anything can happen.

#4 the lonesome tree, then #13 the moon rolling along the branch. (Not sure we have cranes here in Jersey.)

Thank you, Roy. Cranes are some of my favorite birds, with their long white necks. They remind me of my childhood, as I grew up around the rice fields where they love to roam. Glad you liked #13, that’s one of my favorites too. The moon loves to dance/balance on the branches.

Thanks! It’s funny, but I think I’ve photographed that exact tree at least a dozen times. I’m not sure why I’m drawn to it, but it seems like you are too.

Something lopped its top off but it still found a way to grow and thrive, despite a major portion dying along the way. If we look closely enough, most of nature shows us that we are beautiful despite our deformities… Or maybe because of them?
