Photography: Sacramento Historic City Cemetery

I’ve been struggling with some health stuff and things feel very hard. I’m still working on various projects, but in small doses. I did get to meet one of my fellow bloggers in person recently, which was amazing. I also continue to sell a few books a week and reviews are still coming in (thank you!)

While I’m focusing mostly on health right now, I did recently visit the historic Sacramento City Cemetery on a bright fall morning and take these photos. I hope you enjoy them and please let me know if you have a favorite.

As always, thank you for sticking around here. It means the world to me.

    • Thank you so much. I’m making lots of changes around here to start feeling better, but it’s taking up all my mental/physical energy at the moment. Hopefully though it means I’ll be a lot more productive soon.

    • Thanks, Roy. I love walking cemeteries and graveyards too. I think I’ll take a little drive and find another old one to visit before the spooky season ends (although in my mind, it’s always partially spooky season). Glad you liked the dog in the cemetery. He was beautiful and luckily the owner was okay with me taking his photo.

  1. You know how much I love taking photos in cemeteries. But my love of closeups of bugs is even bigger. So my favorites this week are #7 (what a cool spooky photo!!!! Perfect for this time of year!), #10 (I love the light on the pedestal), #11 (my favorite little roly-polies, they made my childhood so happy!), and #19 (one of my current favorite subjects).

    • Thank you so much, Anna! My bug pictures aren’t nearly as good as yours, but I had fun editing them and making them extra spooky. My love of cemeteries really started with my photography journey. It’s been interesting to look for the finer details, to focus on those things in the cracks, or parts of the tombstone that doesn’t give away the names. I think I’ll visit another one before the month is up. Halloween is a good excuse.

      • Sometime, when we are in the same are for once, I’d love to go on a photography journey through a cemetery with you.

    • I’m so glad you like my little roly-poly. Thank you for the kind words and I will do so. It’s a new phase of my life, and I’ve got to start working on my health so I can enjoy what comes next. Planning a big Disney trip in a year or so, and my goal is to be a lot more mobile by then. I can do it!

  2. I’m glad you took photos of the Old City Cemetery! It’s such a weird place, with its combination of Victorian headstones and crypts and scraggly, almost feral plants. I’ve always thought it looked like Edward Gorey designed the landscaping, though I was also a little afraid to walk through there. A woman who claimed to be psychic told me the place was filled with spirits watching the living as they walked among the stones. Part of me is skeptical, but I come from a family that sees ghosts (not me, though, never that un/lucky). Your photographs capture the stillness and historic weight of the cemetery. Hope you are feeling better!

    • Thank you. I’m glad you liked these! You are right, it is a weird place! I could totally see what you’re saying about it looking like it was designed by Edward Gorey. The tombstone placements are so uneven and odd. It’s what I like about it actually, how varied and strange it feels. I wouldn’t doubt there are spirits about that place. I wouldn’t want to be there alone at night.

    • So glad you liked these, especially as someone who frequents old cemeteries. I had a lot of fun editing the bug photos. For some reason I’m always drawn to the tiny things, not the big impressive tombs. It’s the bug or the flower petal I want to look it.

    • Indeed! I’ve done a poor job of taking care of myself for the last five years, letting stress get the better of me. Now, I’m being forced to face it all and it’s honestly a good thing. Better to face things head on.
