52 Photo Challenge: Week 2-Silhouette

A dear friend of mine invited me to participate in a 52-week photo challenge and I happily agreed. Each week a different aspect of photography will be explored. I’m excited to play along and hopefully learn as I do.

This week we were asked to feature a silhouette. As it’s been raining and stormy outside, I did my best to use a sliver of sunlight to backlight some trees and birds. I’m not sure these are successful, but I had fun trying. As I can only submit one photo to the challenge, I’d love to know which of these is your favorite.

Week One’s assignment was to create an image that shows bokeh or shallow depth of field. I used the freeway image from Stormy Downtown Sacramento as my first submission. It wasn’t my best bokeh shot ever, but I’m trying to stick to photos taken within the week of the challenge.

Finally, my camellia has its first baby bloom and it’s too adorable not to share.

  3. Beautiful silhouettes, Bridgette! Keep the good work flowing here. ❤️ You guys are getting hit much harder than we are up here with the rain. But, it’s been raining all day here. I feel so bad for the folks on the coast.

  8. I did participate in the 52-frames for a few weeks when I was beginning, at least until my work unexpectedly sent me to Thailand and, from there, I was not able to post for a while. I was kicked out. For some reason, I never managed to return to the challenge. It’s a nice program that gives you the opportunity to explore different aspects of photography. One lady who entered the program with me and was a beginner at the time became a very competent photographer and she is still there believe me or not, some five years down the road. Good luck on your journey!

    • I don’t think it’s the same challenge, as I can’t imagine anyone getting kicked out. It’s a pretty loose thing. I’m a little disappointed not everyone is adhering to the “photo taken this week” guideline. It seems like a lot of people are just there to show off their best photos, but I’m excited anyway to try different takes and perhaps learn by seeing what others do.

  19. I love all of your photos, Bridgette, but choosing a favourite one is tricky. Having said that, I love the image of the seed pods and also the second from the last picture with the silhouette of the tree branches against the dark sky and a white cloud at the back. It’s sort of ominous in a delightful and interesting way, if that makes sense. You are getting better and better at your photography. Keep going. Xx 🌼💕

  25. I would use photo at top, above the text. Photo #3 (flying bird) I like — if it were my photo, I would crop some from the right to make it square or vertical. (Is that allowed for the assignment?) Fun stuff, Bridgette!

Bridgette, these are all wonderfully atmospheric and the one with the bird sitting underneath the tree gives a real sense of proportion – and also a bit of humour as I’m imagining a discussion between the two! 😀 Of course, your camellia deserves a special mention and I hope you will keep us updated as it blooms. Our rhododendron is full of buds and I’m hopeful for this Spring (it was only planted in late October so fingers crossed!)

  28. Love the atmosphere you capture. I’d have chosen the bird in flight if there had been a secondary subject in the space. As it is I choose the long-range shot of the lone bird facing the camera next to the contrasting majesty of the tree.
