hiding behind a teetering tower of chairs sits
chipped glass words.
burnt popcorn words.
banana slug words.
water-stained trunks choke them down.
wardrobes jammed against the wall.
floorboards nailed shut.
at night they escape.
muffled cries through hallways.
doors which don’t open.
holes in the floor.
don’t listen.
don’t look.
they are already in the air.
*20/100: For the next 100 days, I’ll be writing and posting a poem every day.

It is a breathless, thought-provoking poem.
chipped glass words.
burnt popcorn words.
banana slug words.
What are these words suggesting different forms of decay? Traumatic memories, unsaid truths, family secrets, or even poems themselves?

I was thinking of anger, of words that are hard to spit out, words that hurt so you keep them inside. It’s hard to let them out and worry if you will still be loved. This was my attempt at touching that feeling.

Thank you. The night words/right words are the ones we are able to say, I think. Working on being brave enough to have hard conversations and saying the words.

A wonderful creative journey! Writing a series of 100 poems is a meaningful challenge that allows imagination, emotions, and unique perspectives to unfold one piece at a time. Wishing you continued inspiration as the series grows. ✨📖

Thank you so much, Safia. It’s a lot to do daily, along with living life, but it’s really forcing me to alchemize my feelings in real time. It’s been an interesting, if not exhausting, 21 days so far with many late nights. I appreciate you reading this one and the kind, thoughtful well wishes.

Looks like a thrift store congregation of furniture. Like so many scattered words without a home…

Exactly. There was something about this room that sparked that thought process of words hidden, unsaid things, locked away.
