poetry: stairs beat

you’ve been dreaming
of stairs lately, climbing
them like toddlers do
when grownups forget
to latch the gate. leaping
without worry upward
because pain doesn’t
breathe yet. stepping
like drumming. one
beat. two beat. not
too hard beat. let’s
go again beat. turn
back time beat. hold
my hand beat. not
ready yet beat.

too young.
too young.

it’s temporary until—
it’s not beat.

you’ve been dreaming
of stairs lately.

  1. Sometimes the deepest heartbreak is accepting that you can love someone with everything in you, and they still may not choose to stay. Their decision to let you go does not define your worth. You can miss them, love them, and still understand that you deserve a love that does not leave you questioning whether you are worth fighting for. Sometimes losing them is simply making room for someone who chooses you back.
