poetry: in defense of joy

sun alive crawls
across my ceiling
waking these hands
to scrub the bathroom,
fold the laundry,
type letters.

full bowls of text
sit soaking still
softening black ink
like rainy newspapers
dripping memories
onto clean floors.

sun warmed hands
rub together grey
squishing letters
forming tight threads
until each freckle
crawls alive.

*78/100: For the next 100 days, I’ll be writing and posting a poem every day. All photos are mine.

  1. Number 78 already?! It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long! And clearly, I don’t want your daily poetry fix to end at 100, but that’s just me being selfish.

    You’re an exceptional writer.

    • You are so kind! *blushes* Thank you! 78! It’s flown by. I’m at the point now where I’m considering my next goal and challenge, but first…the home stretch. I’m so lucky we found each other online.

      • Aww! I’m happy about that as well! You seem like and have been pretty good people! Lol.

I’m sure you’ll find the best challenge to tackle next, but “15 minutes at a time.”

  2. Wow, can’t understand the comments so far. This is your strongest, bestest poem ever! You’ve synthesized that abstract thing you’ve been playing with and brought it to the stories you’re trying to tell. I’m envious and admiring all at the same time. The way you effortlessly segue from the routine tasks the day brings to wringing out the ‘laundry’ of words… Just wow. Presuming the freckle reference is to you.

    • Aww! That’s so kind of you!! And yep, the freckle reference is me. I’m about a freckly as they come. I like this one too, and do think I might be developing my own style (kind of). That feels presumptuous to say, but what I mean is, I think I’m finding a way to express myself that works for me. Your comment made my day.

    • Thanks so much, David. I’m learning to not overthink my poems so much through these 100 days, letting them play and move with me. You always impress me with how many you write!

  3. 78 out of 100 already?! The consistency and depth you’ve brought to this series is so inspiring. Like your readers said, none of us want these daily poetry fixes to end! Keep shining! 🌟

    • You are so kind! Thank you. I set out to try and improve my poetry by focusing on it daily, and I’m too close to the process to see the change for myself, but I appreciate you cheering me on.

      • That growth is definitely there, even if it’s hard to see when you’re in the middle of it! 🎨 Writing daily is no small feat, and your dedication shines through in every piece. Always cheering you on—wishing you a wonderful and inspiring week ahead, Bridgette!

      • You are so awesome! Thank you! The weekends are always the hardest for me to write, as the entire family is around and it seems there’s always so much to do. But I’ve come this far.

      • You really have come so far, Bridgette! Weekend chaos with family around makes writing so tricky, so major props to you for keeping the momentum going through it all. Take it one day at a time, give yourself grace, and keep up the amazing work! Wishing you a peaceful and restful weekend ahead! 😊😊

  4. Wow…what a powerful poem…especially stanza 2:

    full bowls of text
    sit soaking still
    softening black ink
    like rainy newspapers
    dripping memories
    onto clean floors.

    …what an imagery!

Your poem is hard to forget, captures details that are not easy to describe, and shows mastery in creativity …I love this poem…beautiful beautiful beautiful poetry ❤️❤️❤️
