poetry: lalique

cobalt time capsule
french darling of mine
bring me grandmother’s youth
her dab behind the ear
fresh moonlight caught
a lover in a felt hat
call me darling, dove
baby, oh baby
books tucked into leather
heels on wet cobblestones
descending into dark blue
bottle me the sweetness
of starting over again

    • Hahaha! Just a little fantasy poem about my grandmother’s old French perfume bottle. Needing a bit of pretend romance on this warm summer day. Craving rain and books by the fire.

  1. Look at what this cute poem is doing! A perfume, of course, but also a little time capsule. There’s something of an old country ballad about it—the lover in the felt hat, the pet names, the wet cobblestones, and that sweet longing to start all over again.

  2. This reminds me of the scents in my mother’s cedar chest. I remember an old bottle of My Sin, and another tiny bottle with the name written in French. Those scents were always mixed with her memories, all the letters and mementos she would let me rifle through. A great memory

    • I’m so glad my poem sparked that memory for you. I have about a dozen bottles of my grandmother’s old perfume, and they sit beside my own bottles on a vintage mirror. They are probably my favorite thing about getting ready in the morning.

  3. Turning your grandmother’s vintage Lalique bottle into such a atmospheric, nostalgic piece of romance is so brilliant! 🌹 The imagery of wet cobblestones and felt hats really does give it that timeless, classic ballad feel.

  4. This had me riveted! I love how you used your grandmother’s perfume bottle. I don’t think I’ve read anything like this before. I can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
