Poetry: Playdate

When Spider-Man comes to your house,
you unlock the deadbolt and brace yourself.
He has to clear the entryway at a full sprint,
and you don’t want to be collateral damage.

When Spider-Man comes to your house,
you better have sourdough toast, pickles,
and sparkling water on the counter.
Apparently, saving the neighborhood
requires a very specific diet.

When Spider-Man comes to your house,
he will absolutely chase your rabbit around the backyard.
He’ll get burrs stuck to his polyester muscles,
sit in the hammock to pick them off,
and roast your gardening skills.

When Spider-Man comes to your house,
he might peel back his mask just far enough to breathe,
expose his secret identity,
and clobber you at dominoes
until he literally rolls off his chair laughing.

When Spider-Man comes to your house,
you will notice the exact moment
his shins match the length of yours.
You’ll look at his massive feet,
look at the trail of stuffed animals leading into the hallway,
and accept reality:
A superhero is in your living room right now.

So you forget the gardening. You ignore the toys.

And you get on the floor.

  1. What a delightful and heartwarming piece!
I loved how Spider-Man becomes more than a superhero—he becomes a symbol of childhood wonder, imagination, and the fleeting magic of growing up.
The ending is especially beautiful, reminding us to set aside life’s distractions and simply cherish these precious moments. A joy to read. ❤️

    • So glad you liked this one! Whenever I’m with little kids I see my own at that age and remember just how fast it all goes. I savored it as much as one can, but I miss having little ones around all day talking to me about nonsense. Luckily I get to see my nephew and goddaughter every week.

I love this! Especially these lines… They made me smile:

  3. What a tender celebration of childhood and its fleeting magic. Beneath the Spider-Man mask lies every parent’s quiet wonder at watching a little dreamer grow, until one day the superhero’s shins are as long as your own.

    • I’m so glad you like this. My kids are both adults and so when my nephew comes to play it always feels special, because I truly know how fast it all goes. I try and soak every moment up when we are together.

    • Yeah, this one was super fun to write. Not giving away his secret identity, I will say, he used my name instead of calling me auntie, fully committing to the bit (hahaha). With my kids both adults, being around little ones feels even more special.
