52 Photo Challenge: Week 15-Series

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to create a series of images that went together. I do this every week and so I decided to try and tell a story with my images. My daughter and I went to a creek by our house and took a nice stroll together with our cameras.

The light was harsh and the animals scarce. I did get a few bird shots and one of a turtle, but nothing I could turn into a series. So, I walked along the trail and took pictures of the flowers for a bit. I started thinking about when we sprinkled my grandmother’s ashes in the Oregon mountains and how butterflies followed our truck. I sort of jokingly said, “Grandma, could you bring some butterflies my way. I can’t do just flowers.”

A few minutes later about a dozen butterflies arrived. I chased them around the field. The light was bad and I couldn’t get the shots I wanted, but I was in heaven. Chasing butterflies in a field of wildflowers is how to spend the day. I put the images in order from far away to close up. Let me know what you think and if you have a favorite.

    • Exactly! I was never close to my grandmother, but she was always kind of there. In and out—like the butterflies. This experience really made me believe in magic and feel like a kid again. I needed that.

    • Thanks, Ali. It very much made me feel like a child chasing the butterflies. They are so fast, but that one stood and posed for me the longest. I wish the light wasn’t so harsh, but it is getting to be that time of year. I’ll have to start going out much earlier or later to get better shots now.

    1. Life can look so crisp and clear on the outside, yet it can be so foggy on the inside
    2. Life is starting to clear up-at least on one thing and continues to clear

  11. OK Bridgette, this is a different form of going away than I’m familiar with. But thanks for showing me this other way! Your pictures are lovely (you are lovely too). And you found your “story” didn’t you! Thanks to memory and your grandmother too. I have a notion about stories – I don’t fuss the “prompt” so much. The intent is to express. Pictures AND story-text is what you found. By its nature what & how arrived, that’s all valid to me. Accept what you get – always a good idea! Besides your response is the more creative one. I am ever impressed with you.

    • Hi, Neil! I’m not going away, but I will be going slow and I won’t be posting as much as I was. Photography has become a kind of therapy for me. When I’m behind the camera it feels like I’m transported into another world. I can easily take pictures for 2-3 hours (although I rarely have that time). I suspect it will now be a huge part of my life and my recovery. Seeing the world through the lens helps me put beauty in focus. It’s hard to have fear when you focus on beauty.
