I’ve spent the week in various places in downtown Sacramento and it reminded me how much I miss traveling. I used to visit new cities, exploring on my own, letting my curiosity guide me. I’d strike up conversations with strangers, share a bit of their worldview for a moment, and I always left feeling renewed. While I’ve not done much of it lately, there are moments that feed that creative energy. Little artist dates, as Julie Cameron calls them.

One such date was a quick stop in Petaluma on the way back from our Dillion Beach trip. The teens went one way and I went the other. Although it was quick, there was plenty for me to feast my eyes upon. Here are a few of my favorite shots. Let me know if you have a favorite and let’s travel together soon.

Happy Wednesday! The last few months have felt like a blur, but maybe I’m coming out of this new phase of healing. I’ve had several wonderful conversations with old friends and made plans to meet two more later this week. I’m ready to trust and rebuild connections after feeling like my world was simply too tilted to stand straight. It’s a nice feeling.

These photos are from my trip last week to Dillon Beach. I’ve been here hundreds of times, but there’s always something different to see and photograph. Perhaps there’s a life lesson in there somewhere. Please let me know if you have a favorite photo and have a fantastic week.

52 Photo Challenge: Week 25-Contrast Color

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to capture contrasting colors. I was lucky enough to spend a night at Dillion’s Beach and these photos are from that brief trip. I edited them using a softer light and hope it gives the collection a cohesive feeling.

I’ll be posting a few more photos from the trip later this week. I’m amazed at how I can walk the same beach for years and always find new surprises. Let me know if you have a favorite photo and I hope you have a fantastic week.

52 Photo Challenge: Week 23-Abstract

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to play with the idea of abstract photography. It was defined for me as photos that look unrealistic or unrecognizable. The goal is for the photos to look more like paintings or artwork than a photograph.

My photos this week are from two different locations. The top image and the first seven photos are from William Land Park, including the Sacramento Zoo. The final three images are from a Melanie Martinez concert I attended with my daughter last Wednesday. I edited these photos using the same presets to give the set a cohesive feel. Let me know if you have a favorite.

52 Photo Challenge: Week 22-Food

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to capture food. It was a busy week celebrating my son graduating from high school, but I did sneak away yesterday to the Carmichael Farmer’s Market. I’m not in love with any of these shots, but I did enjoy spending some time alone and stocking up on my summer favorites.

I’ve been in a funk and stuck in my feelings. I’m extremely behind in reading blogs and responding to comments. Please be patient with me. I’m doing what I can to move through this and hopefully, I’ll be back to myself soon. In the meantime, I think WordPress might have glitched on my photography post for last week. I was a 4-H kid. I started out showing guinea pigs when I was about 12 and slowly moved up to horses. The culmination of my year was always the Sacramento County Fair.

This week we attended the final hours of the fair to cheer on my daughter’s friend who had entered a flower arrangement in the youth exhibit. While the animals were almost all gone, it was still great fun to wander the fair with my camera. I hope these images spark a bit of joy or memory for you today. 52 Photo Challenge: Week 20-Unique Perspective

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to capture images with a unique perspective. After overthinking and beating myself up last week, I decided to have fun with this one. All of these photos are taken in my yard. I rolled around on the ground, played with the cat, and chased a few ladybugs and bees. It was probably the most fun I’ve had taking photos in a long time.

I edited the photos differently this week too, opting for a sort of dark wood feeling. It might not fit with spring, but it fits the mood of these photos and I really like it. Let me know if you have a favorite and have a fantastic week.

52 Photo Challenge: Week 14-One Lens

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to use one lens. I only have one and was originally going to try and modify the challenge by setting it at only 50mm. However, once on the trip, it felt like one too many things to worry about. Instead, I focused on capturing things I love—lichen, moss, and the dark greens of the Oregon and Washington coast. I spent time as a fairy sitting in the woods and as a romantic staring at the ocean waves.

The cemetery shots are from one of the oldest in Washington State, Oysterville Cemetery. The broken wagon, chuch, bible, and roof photo are from the Oregon ghost town of Golden. It was established in the early 1840s and some of its buildings were restored in the 1950s as film sets for the TV show “Bonanza” and a few Western movies.

52 Photo Challenge: Week 3-Black and White

Welcome back to the 52-week photo challenge. This week the assignment was to photograph something in black and white. Since I was already in downtown Sacramento this week, I went on a hunt for things I thought would translate well to black and white. I looked for interesting lines, shapes, and buildings I thought looked out of time. While some of the images really didn’t work, I did find some I felt good enough to share here.

As I can only submit one photo to the challenge, I’d love to know which of these is your favorite. My favorites are the first three images and I’m leaning toward the train station. What do you think?
