“The skies and land are so enormous, and the detail so precise and exquisite that wherever you are you are isolated in a glowing world between the macro and the micro, where everything is sidewise under you and over you, and the clocks stopped long ago.”—Ansel Adams
This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was macro photography. The idea is to showcase a subject larger than it is in real life—an extreme close-up. These are my favorite types of photos and I was excited to spend some time looking for things to zoom in on.
I spent the morning at Folsom Lake with the dragonflies and then finished up with a few shots in my backyard. I alternated between my macro lens and my 14-150mm lens. Let me know which shot you like best and have a fantastic week!

- Photos were taken with an Olympus OM-D and edited with ON1 Photo RAW

You can’t see how creepy they really are in person until you zoom in! They have such odd faces and eyes.

Love the dragonflies. Amazing how you can get a clear photo as usually they are moving so fast. Yay for the kitty, of course, but I really like # 8 with the little bee looking up at you. 🙂

Thank you! Yes, they are super fast but I was lucky that it was slightly windy and they were hanging on for dear life! My pumpkin patch is filled with bees this year. It makes me so happy.

Wonderful enchanting closeups of the dragonflies from 1 to 5. Lucky timing to capture them at rest – beautiful shots! 🙂

Thanks! It was slightly windy and they were clinging to the waving plants. #4 was hovering in the air. It was a thrill to capture that shot (after taking about a hundred of them in the air all blurry). I was so captivated that I didn’t hear a truck pull up behind me and when the owner’s dog barked I about jumped out of my skin! I love how photography can fully engage my senses.

Get one of those dragonflies flying and I’ll be really impressed! I liked the ladybird, that green and red is a lovely contrast.

I did! #4 was taken in flight. He was hovering for about 10 seconds and I managed to get that lucky shot. It was thrilling! The ladybird didn’t have any spots, which made the contrast even greater I think.

It was just after sunrise and already about 80 degrees but with a slight breeze off the lake water. I’m glad you enjoyed these shots.

I had a feeling they would be 🙂 Jake continues to be such a great neighborhood cat and so darn photogenic. I read that seeing a ladybug without spots is a sign of impending pregnancy (not me!), but I’m doing a maternity photoshoot for one of my favorite people on Thursday and I’m taking it as a positive sign.

I saw a lady bug with spots, any premonition on that?

If you spot a ladybug it’s supposed to be good luck. Now, if one lands on you, that’s even better! Count the number of spots to predict the number of months until your greatest wish comes true. Now I need to walk around and wait for ladybug with spots to land on me!

These are all amazing – loved 8&9 though. And the lake – I do love water reflections

Those two photos were taken in my backyard, #9 is a weed most people hate but that I find quite lovely. I’m a sucker for water reflections too and the sky was being extra beautiful and cooperative.

Well, they do say a weed is only a flower in the wrong place. In New Zealand lupins are seen a nuisance weeds – here in the UK, we cultivate them. I think they are a wonderful flower.

I love that you can’t choose! Thank you. That ladybug was pretty darn cute, but oh so tiny. I couldn’t see its face when I took the shot.

Gorgeous photos as always, Bridgette. My favourites are #4 because that shot of the dragonfly in flight, legs lightly tucked under him, is incredible. The detail is wonderful—also, #7, the ladybird photo; I’ve never seen a ladybird without spots. Finally, I had to go with #10 – Jake is adorable and as for those green eyes … . I like the photo of the lake, too. Much love to you, my friend. Xx 😘🌹💕
