52 Photo Challenge: Week 30-Backlight

This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was backlight. From what I understand, this is similar to silhouette, but you can still see a lot of detail in the subject.

As I was taking my daughter and her best friend to the California State Fair, I decided to do this assignment there. It proved to be only mildly successful, but it was interesting walking around a place that holds such fond memories with only my camera for company.

  8. Number 1 says color rules the world. Numbers 2, 3, 4 show natures finest face. Number 6 has something of magic inside of it. Number 8, oh no, colors can’t hide themselves. Number Nine, my secret favorite, wonder woman on a horse, and I told you who and why. Number 10, what do I know about photography rules, but I like this one too, Aren’t those shadows and that burning sky and the crowded humanity – aren’t they all wonderful. What rules, good photograph!

    • Thank you for such thoughtful feedback, Neil. I’m so glad you liked them all. I knew when I took #10 that you’d like it. I often photograph the small things, but you’ve got me looking around a bit more. Yes, I think it’s good to get people in the shots sometimes.

      • More than sometimes, were it me, but it’s not, it’s you! Had an engineer friend with some very expensive gear which he could, and would, tell you ALL about, yikes! But his pictures, lovely mountains for sure, but people, nowhere to be seen. Not even his lady friend. Kinda too empty for me. I like Your pictures more!

  10. 5, 6 & 9are excellent photos. All-over beautiful. Iam so happy you ,, daughter with her friend visit California State fair. Walking around the places & you find the memories some images capture in camera.

    • You are so sweet! Thank you, Dawn. Not sure you can take a bad shot of a sunflower. Also, I really wished those horses had been going the other direction, but I was thrilled when the girl spun around so I didn’t just get backlit horse rear ends 🙂

  19. Dear Bridgette, just a really brief note for now. I’m sorry I’m so behind with reading and commenting on your posts recently. I’m having the same problem with everyone else, too. I have some difficult family issues going on, which are taking up a lot of my time.   20. Dear Bridgette, I said I would be back here today, so here I am. I’m glad that you had some time at the fair with your beautiful daughter. All of your photos are lovely and really good examples of backlighting. I have three favourites; the first one is #1, as it looks like the sun has been captured in the petals of the sunflower, making it radiate delightfully. I find the same with #8, where the light has infused into the paper umbrella, making it glow from within. And finally, I love #6, the image of the funfair flying swings. It’s a fantastic photo, both for its backlighting and because your focus is so good that, although the ride would have been moving quite rapidly, everything is in sharp focus.

You are one of my favourite bloggers, and I do want to keep up with your posts. I feel we have forged a lovely friendship over the years that I’ve known you, and I always value that very much.     • Thank you dear Ellie for both your thoughtful comments. You are such a lovely person and I’m so happy our paths have crossed. I’m sorry things are so hard right now. My blogs will always be here, so no worries about when or if you get to them. The most important thing is you feeling better.

      My family is doing really well right now. Summer brings out the best in all of us and today we will spend the day celebrating my mother’s birthday at the lake (she’s back in town for the entire month). I predict it will be a wonderful day!
