“You can frame a moment. But you can’t frame life.”—Armin Houman
This week my assignment for the 52 photo challenge was to fill the frame with the subject. As I tend to take a lot of macro shots, I wanted to challenge myself to find something different to fill the frame.
As I started out this morning it began to rain, a wonderful surprise, so I decided to take a drive. The tree above and the first seven photos are all from around the Lincoln area and taken from my car. The rest of the photos are from my yard. Let me know which one you think best fits the challenge and if you have a favorite. Hope your week is wonderful!
Also, you may remember last year I was writing a short story a week. It just occurred to me it might be fun to see what story I was writing this exact time last year and include a link with these Monday photos. So, here you go:

- Photos were taken with an Olympus OM-D and edited with ON1 Photo RAW
- If you want to join the 52 Photo Challenge, you can find all the information at nicolesy.com

Not sure… All great, of course.

I really struggled with “fill the frame” as the assignment. I’m glad those work for you. The birds in #7 were SUPER loud. I should have taken a video. They definitely had some things to tell me, but I don’t like being yelled at so I didn’t’ stick around to listen.

Some birds are rowdy sobs. Usually with very little to say for as loud as they get. Sounds familiar… 😊

That would be “rowdy snots”. Have I mentioned I hate predictive text?

I hate it too! Although, sobs isn’t too far off. Could be worse.

Haha! Yes, they really are. Luckily my yard is usually only visited by a pair of lovely doves that coo to me. I’d prefer them any day to those loud rascals.

Great job! The focus on filling the frame really enhances the subject’s impact.

I like the rusty shed and the pumpkin photos best. Fill the frame is just do it, most times it works well 🙂

Yeah, typical me, I’m always overthinking it. I think these work though. Thank you for always cheering me on.

Overthinking is the habit to get out of. Look, see and shoot 🙂

So true! I’ll keep working on it.

Number 7 reminds me of the movie The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock. The cat is beautiful! The Cat Tails are pretty, and they make a good torch too. Nice work, Bridgette! 😊

That’s a classic movie, for sure. Thank you so much, John. It’s getting a bit harder to find new locations to shoot and to make my photos different than the week before. I suppose more than halfway through this challenge that’s bound to happen.

Yes, it happens which is a bummer. My site has over 5000 posts so it’s getting a bit tough to come up with fresh titles and photography. I admit that there is redundancy on my site. Keep going, Bridgette! 😊👍🏻

I think #3 and 4 fit the bill the best but all of them are really nice.

Thanks! Yes, those do probably fill the frame the most.

10… kitty!!!!!

He’s such a good kitty! He came running when he saw the camera, but he wouldn’t let me take a decent picture until he got all his pets in. Had to wait until he became a purry puddle at me feet.

The first picture reminds me of growing up on the Canadian Prairies. Maggie

I could totally see how it looks like a prairie! I hope that brought back some happy memories. Thank you.

Photographer and image kind of join hands for my “winner”, your top-image of that tree. Why? I’ll tell you why. Assignment, fill the frame, and here we easily recognize even the tips of the tree that we don’t see, side, side and top. But the human part is that you have the tree “touching” each limit of the sky. It is both full – and – encompassing, like arms reaching around. A quiet sort of mastery.
Nbr 5. Think I’ve almost been there. Rocks, grass, what’s not to like.
Nbr 7. Yep birds are birds, better posed on a tree. Maybe I don’t like the flying bird, the only thing here soft focus, seems out of place. Fussy me.
Nbr 10, Who doesn’t love a cat? Well, some. But I’m not one of them. Kitty feels safe and likes you a lot by that expression I see.
Last, I am a bother. Did you push the color on these? Yes or no, the color was some uncomfortably too intense, but an easy change. Really, was that real. Maybe my eyes are crossed. And I’m still a fuss.
Nice job Bridgette. I like your photography. It usually feels very “involved” with the image. Admirable.

I can always count on very thoughtful comments from you. It’s why I like you so much. Yes, that tree photo was actually the very first one I took. I thought, that should fill the frame quite nicely. I tried a couple different crops, but decided it was best to not have any sky above the tree. Glad you think it worked.
Yes, #5 was another spot where I thought…that rocky hill just might do it. I almost didn’t share #7 because of that blurry bird, but I convinced myself it was actually better with it there because it shows more of what it was like. The birds were yelling and flying all over that tree. Always in motion. I decided, yeah, he could stay.
I took these photos using the “art” mode of the camera. It saturates the colors and that’s why they seem a bit more intense than they really are. For this shoot, I liked it. It sort of fit the rusty buildings, the dry grass, the grey sky. I hope it wasn’t too distracting.

7’s tree full of birds was a great vibrant shot of nature 🙂 Also the manmade symmetry of 3 and 4 – good framing!

The header picture, the magnificent, magical tree. Or #5, the rock formation softened by the wild grasses. And the short story reminds me of your writing talent and how well you channel your ideas.

Oh man, you make it IMPOSSIBLE to choose a favorite! I love the crispness of the colors in the cattails, the symmetry of the pipes behind the fence, the smooth pumpkin hiding in the leaves, the seeds that beg you to blow and make a wish, and who can resist a contented kitty? 💞

I’ve never been good at tree names either; when I was a kid I used to ask adults , what tree/ flower is that but they never knew 😦

It feels like it’s becoming harder and harder to find people who do know. I do know all the trees in my own yard though and make sure my kids and even my tiny nephew know what they are. It’s pretty cute to hear a 2-year-old say “hydrangea.”
