“Way out in the country tonight he could smell the pumpkins ripening toward the knife and the triangle eye and the singeing candle.”—Ray Bradbury
October was a blur of busyness and I’m behind in everything—laundry, dishes, yard work, and blogging. Life is like that sometimes.
My month included poetry night. Housesitting. A music festival. Helping my sister-in-law after emergency surgery. Becoming a godmother. Dungeons & Dragons. Five pumpkin patches with my nephew. Halloween traditions. Movies. Haunted houses. Lots of treats.
My photo assignment, which I’m posting four days late, was to capture the fall season. I took these photos at our annual family outing to Rickey Ranch last week. Not my best work, but who doesn’t love cute animals and a beautiful sky.
To everyone starting NaNoWriMo—happy writing! I’m not participating this year but I’ll root you on. Bring on November!

Thanks! I’ve been very overwhelmed with life but I am well. I miss reading your poetry and hope to have some time to dig in this weekend. You know how I like to binge your stuff!

I understand overwhelmed. Hope it improves soon. I’m off to pretend I’m a novelist…. 😉

Oh, that’s right! You are doing NaNo this year. I’m excited for you and for me if I get to read it someday. I’m cheering you on.

I’m posting the sausage making as I go, so it’ll be there to read if you dare. I don’t know where it will end up (no plot, no problem) and it might trickle out. We’ll see.

The carver of that pumpkin won a local contest and so it was displayed at our favorite pumpkin patch. It was really cool in person. Thanks for the kind words!

There’s nothing else quite like feeding a baby goat in the palm of your hand. I was a bit obsessed with that little fellow.

I’ve never done NaNoWriMo, although I have a short story in progress (there’s an idea bouncing around in my head, and I’ve written a few paragraphs, at least) that I’ll work on during this planned hiatus from DLTDGB.

Oh, I’m excited to hear you are working on a short story. Will you post it somewhere I’ll be able to read it? Will this be a fiction piece?

Yes. I may even ask you to read earlier draft(s) and offer suggestions and constructive criticism, if that’s ok with you. I’ll message you more details eventually.

It’s funny becaose I normally associate autumn and winter with colour- you get much better light than you do in the summer (in terms of photography) – but of yours, I really like the windmill. That’s a delicious contrast between the colours.

Yeah, these photos are a bit muted. Honestly, I wasn’t very happy with any of them and tried making them more uniform with editing. I might have missed the mark. I’m glad you liked the windmill shot. Thank you for always giving me such great feedback.

Trouble is, you need that clarity too, which often goes walkabout in winter. It’s pouring here today.

Lovely fall collection, especially 2’s bold silhouette, the migrating birds in 6 and 8’s rosy sunset. 🙂 Glad you folks had such a fun Halloween! ❤

Thanks, Tom! I’m a sucker for silhouette and sunset photos. I hope you had a lovely Halloween as well.

I love 3, 7, 9 for the challenge. I don’t know if I had seen a picture of your son. Both kids are beautiful.

Thank you so much, Nicole! Yeah, my boy isn’t a huge fan of me using photos of him on the blog…but he consented to these shots. I’m rather fond of them both. I think I’ll keep feeding them.

#’s 2, 3, 7, 8. Quite fine! “Best work” is so subjective, don’t you think?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I suppose there is no “best work,” but I was disappointed in the shots I got when downloading them. All the chicken shots were blurry and none of the wide shots of the pumpkin field turned out. Everything was washed out. I tried to fix things by editing them all with the same color scheme but now I’m unsure if that was worse…I suppose what I’m saying is that sometimes I’m hard on myself. I appreciate you always stopping by and for the kind comments. Thank you.

Methinks you are too hard on yourself. Look not with your own eyes always, but use the eyes of your audience. Some fine photos here, in my opinion.

#7 gets my vote, Bridgette!
There something about old trucks
on a pumpkin farm that just tugs at my heart!
Your kids are quite fascinating-looking people;
I like that in our youth and wish them great success.
