“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.”-Langston Hughes
It’s the last week of the year and I’m spending it reflecting, journaling, and making goals for the new year. It’s important to keep growing and striving to be the best version of ourselves. For me, it means writing more, having a better self-care routine, and spending time with my family.
In the spirit of beauty and growth, I’d like you to join me for a small photo journey into my backyard during a pause in the pouring rain this morning. I hope you enjoy these images and are staying warm. Happy New Year!

Love your photos. Gorgeous. I need to get on my own reflecting here. Today I had therapy and napped. I am exhausted from making it through the holiday.

Thanks, Nicole! Therapy and a nap is the perfect way to spend a day. I’m exhausted too and I still have quite a bit of celebrating to do yet. My boy’s 18th birthday is tomorrow and then we are having my husband’s family over for Christmas on Jan. 8th (we always do it late and it gives me an excuse to leave up all my decorations!) I still have to shop and wrap more presents, but its nice to have the extra time. I wonder though…will I ever NOT wait until the last minute to do everything?

Really lovely photos, Bridgette. What is that interesting red/orange flower or fruit? It looks a bit like lychee. I haven’t seen anything like that over here. It rained here, too, this afternoon. Fortunately, it was just after my journey back from town in Alfie (my wheelchair). I just missed getting soaked, thankfully. I love watching the rainfall through a window when I’m indoors. Being a wheelchair user and being unable to use an umbrella, it’s better for me to be inside when it rains. I hope the New Year is everything you wish it to be. I wish you good health, joy and peace. Love Ellie Xx 🤗💖🌻

Hi Ellie! You won’t believe this, but I didn’t know what the plant was until I just did some research and apparently it’s a Strawberry tree and we can eat it! What?! I have lived here for 20 years and didn’t know that. I’ll be harvesting them today and giving it a taste.
I’m glad you didn’t got soaked in your outing today. I never considered how hard it would be to use an umbrella with a wheelchair. Yes, I much prefer sitting under blankets and watching the rain out my window.
I’ve been thinking of you often Ellie and hope you had a lovely holiday. I’m catching up on blog reading today. Have a wonderful New Year beautiful friend!

Wow … I’ve never heard of a strawberry tree. I wonder if it actually tastes like strawberries. It would be delicious. You’ll have to let me know. Perhaps, I’ll google it, too, and learn something about it. It’s always good to learn something new every day.
Thank you so much for thinking about me. That’s so kind of you. I’m trying to catch up on some blog reading today, too, as it’s been raining heavily all day. I’m going out this evening to my drum circle, which is tremendous fun, but luckily, a friend is giving me a lift in her car. I don’t go out on my own after dark. I’d be too vulnerable. It was dark at 3.30 pm today! It makes the day seem shorter, but I quite like being cosy indoors (also with a blanket), so don’t mind too much. Xx 💖

It’s difficult photographing in the rain, isn’t it? Everything seems to bleed greyness. I used to find some kind of b/w processing worked best, that’s why my favourite of your images is at the very top.

It certainly was a challenge—the wind kept moving things around and making it hard to get images in focus. Yes, I tried converting a few into black and white but next week I’m going to attempt an entire shoot in black in white. Might go downtown and look for interesting buildings.

My software has loads of bw effects, simulating stronger/weaker R, G and B. Plus it can simulate different types of film. There’s far more to it than just “convert to grey”.

Mine does too. It’s a bit overwhelming, actually. It’s got about 100 different black and white settings. I played around a bit with it this week with the three black and white images, but I’m going to try shooting in black and white next week to see if that gives me a different effect.

Yes it is overwhelming. I kinda adopted affects I liked, but there must be lots I never sawI

Wow, Bridgette, I love the details and colors in your new photos, wonderful! Maybe you should focus on your photography more often? Better the rain than snow you know. It is super windy here today and the dust is flying everywhere.

Thank you so much, John! I was excited that little hummingbird decided to land on the branches above me and yell for my attention! 🙂 It’s windy here too, but no dust—lots of tiny leaves though!

Hummers are so sweet! They love the little feeder in my backyard too.

Thank you! Yes, I’ve been working on some poetry and doing a lot of reading. Rain puts me in a very calm, introspective mood.

But do you hit up clearance stuff for the January 8th party? I took gifts to my niece and nephew last night and then went and stocked up on wrapping paper and gift tags for next year. Plus I bought a tinsel christmas cactus and a christmas tree cat hideout. I hope your son has a happy 18th!

I do hit up the sales! It’s kind of the best part (don’t tell them I said that.) When my nocturnal teens wake we are going shopping today. Thanks for the birthday wishes. It’s so weird to think I raised a human to 18. Wasn’t I just 18??

I used to compare my wild backyard to the fancy manicured lawns of others and felt like I was always coming up short. Now, as I’ve gotten older, I see the beauty of its wildness and treasure it.

I prefer the wild ones…and don’t want to put the work into the manicured ones! I used to live next to someone who never had a blade of grass out of place. I’m pretty sure mine drove him crazy, lol

That’s my next door neighbor! I’ve had a few conversations with him over the years about it. I actually considered making a sign that said “I’m busy raising kids not grass!”

The way your camera picks up the rain is breathtaking! The low light setting from the sky is literally causing the water reflections to dance through the shadows.

Thank you for sharing a part of your world and wonderful pictures!!.. Mother Nature displaying her magic showing all creatures together in harmony (us humans could take some lessons… 🙂 )… 🙂
Hope the New Year is all that you hoped it would be and until we meet again..
May the dreams you hold dearest
